Kaizer Chiefs Cement League Lead As Sundowns Falter In PSL Midweek Action
Kaizer Chiefs extended their lead at the top of the Absa Premiership table with a 2 nil away victory at struggling Chippa United after Mamelodi Sundowns could only manage a nil all draw at Baroka.
A Dumisani Zuma brace ensured Chiefs 100% away record was kept intact as coach Ernst Midderndorp drew his cards with one eye on the Soweto Derby.
Midderndorp rested some star players including Khama Billiat, George Maluleka, Daniel Akpeyi, Leonardo Castro and Lebogang Manyama with only Daniel Cardoso, Willard Katsande and Samir Nurkovic, the experienced of the lot to feature with rare starts for fringe players such as Philani Zulu, Siyaboga Ngezana and Kgotso Moleko.
Chippa United remain rock bottom as they continued to sing the blues remaining the only side without a league win and with a paltry four points from 10 games.
In another match, Mamelodi Sundowns faltered and lost ground on runaway log leaders Kaizer Chiefs with a 0-0 draw at Baroka FC to fall seven points behind Amakhosi though they still have a game in hand.
Experienced Sundowns mentor Pitso Mosimane will however know better than most that points on the board are better than a game in hand as games in hand are not guaranteed maximum points.
Kaizer Chiefs play host to Orlando Pirates at the FNB stadium on Saturday afternoon whilst Pitso Mosimane’s Sundowns travel to face his old foe Steve Komphela and an in-form Golden Arrows side in another tricky fixture on Sunday.
