Teboho Mokoena Breathes Sigh of Relief Ahead of Bafana Bafana’s Final World Cup Qualifier

Bafana Bafana midfielder Teboho Mokoena has avoided suspension for South Africa’s final 2026 World Cup qualifying match after a tense buildup surrounding a previous administrative error.

Mokoena entered last Friday’s clash against Zimbabwe already carrying a yellow card from the September match against Nigeria. A caution in the game at Moses Mabhida Stadium would have ruled him out for the upcoming fixture against Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium. He played the full 90 minutes without receiving a booking, sparing him from suspension.

The incident stems from Mokoena being fielded against Lesotho in March while ineligible. He had previously accumulated two yellow cards during the qualifying campaign—against Benin in November 2023 and Zimbabwe seven months later. South Africa won the Lesotho match 2-0, but FIFA later docked Bafana three points, fined SAFA CHF 10,000 (approximately R213,000), and issued a warning. Benin was awarded the 3-0 victory.

FIFA’s disciplinary rules for the 2026 World Cup preliminary competition state that players who receive two cautions across different matches are automatically suspended for the following match. Red cards carry over to the final tournament, but single yellow cards do not. Therefore, Mokoena can play against Rwanda without the caution affecting potential participation in the World Cup finals in the USA, Canada, and Mexico if South Africa qualifies.

By fielding an ineligible player, SAFA breached Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. FIFA regulations allow for match forfeits, fines, and potential sanctions against the player when rules are violated, emphasizing the integrity of the competition.

South Africa currently sits second in their group behind Benin, who remain on top with 17 points following a 1-0 win over Rwanda. Hugo Broos’ side must win the final group match to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Mokoena’s clearance to play removes one major obstacle for Bafana ahead of a crucial clash. The midfielder will now be central to Broos’ plans as the team aims to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
