Kaizer Chiefs Overcome Health Scare in DR Congo Ahead of CAF Confederation Cup Second Leg

Kaizer Chiefs faced a challenging situation in Lubumbashi, DR Congo, ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup second qualifying round first-leg clash against AS Simba Kolwezi. Despite the difficulties, Amakhosi managed a goalless draw and now head into the return leg at Dobsonville Stadium with a chance to secure a group stage spot.

The team dealt with a health scare that left five players struggling with diarrhea and vomiting. Co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef revealed the severity of the issue. “I have to say congratulations to the players because we had five players waking up with diarrhea and vomiting. I don’t know what happened with the food, but we were in a critical situation in the morning with five of them not sure if they will play,” he said.

In addition to the health issues, Chiefs had to adapt to the artificial turf at Stade TP Mazembe. The pitch posed challenges for their usual style of play, but the players adjusted, relying on long balls and strategic positioning. Ben Youssef praised the team’s resilience. “Even though they were not 100% ready, they were ready to fight for the team,” he said.

The team also had to contend with minor injuries. Glody Makabi Lilepo picked up a small ankle injury two days before the match but decided to play. He lasted until the 64th minute before being substituted for Ashley Du Preez, who had a chance to score late in the game. Ben Youssef acknowledged the effort, saying, “We know that Ashley will give us a lot of quality in the team with his speed. He got an opportunity to score, but he didn’t score.”

Preparation was key for Chiefs. The coaching staff anticipated the challenges of playing on artificial turf and facing passionate home fans. Ben Youssef emphasized the mental readiness of the squad. “I explained to the players that this game will be like war, so we have to fight and don’t have any excuse. We should score and not concede, and we succeeded and have to continue to work in the next game to qualify for the group stages.”

Chiefs now return home needing a win to progress. The team will focus on recovery and tactical preparation to overcome AS Simba Kolwezi in front of their fans at Dobsonville Stadium. Despite the hurdles in Lubumbashi, Kaizer Chiefs showed determination and discipline, keeping their CAF Confederation Cup ambitions alive.
