Terry wants to be Chelsea manager one day.
John Terry may have played his last match for Chelsea, but the club legend’s ambition is to return one day as manager.
The 36-year-old recently left the club after 22 years and over 700 appearances as captain during their most successful period, and made sure his next move, to Championship side Aston Villa, wouldn’t pit him against his beloved Blues.
Villa boss Steve Bruce recently revealed that he and Terry “talked about coaching and how we can help him do his badges” with the aim of one day taking charge at Stamford Bridge.
“I don’t think you can ever dream too big. I’ve always wanted to be the very best and if that’s in management then Chelsea’s the one,” Terry said.
However, Terry acknowledges that his coaching career will have to start more modestly, and considered former Premier League rival and England teammate Steven Gerrard, who rejected the manager’s job at MK Dons to take charge of the Liverpool U18 side.
“Me and Lamps (Frank Lampard) have had those conversations,” Terry added. “That would be incredible but I realise as well you can’t go in somewhere like Chelsea as your first job.
“You need to go and learn, whether that’s in the academy like Stevie is doing. It’s difficult to get jobs. I see a lot of players from my generation not walking into jobs that maybe I thought they would get.
“So I think you need to go out and do your work and put your minutes in on the pitch and make your mistakes that no one sees so that when you do go in, you’re kind of ready.”
