Thabo Cele Eyes Bafana Bafana Call-Up After Kaizer Chiefs Move

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele has wasted no time in making an impact at his new club, setting himself up for his primary goal just weeks after returning to South African football. The 28-year-old midfielder joined Amakhosi in January after an eight-and-a-half-year stint in Europe, where he played in Portugal, Poland, and most recently, Russia with Fakel Voronezh.
Cele’s return to the PSL was driven by his ambition to break into the Bafana Bafana squad, something that proved difficult during his time abroad. Despite his experience in European football, he struggled to catch the eye of the national team selectors, prompting his decision to move back home and showcase his talent on a bigger stage.
Since making his debut as a substitute in the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates, Cele has quickly established himself as a key figure in Kaizer Chiefs’ midfield. He has now started four consecutive matches, playing the full 90 minutes in the last three, and has impressed with his composure, passing ability, and work rate.
His performances have not gone unnoticed, as he stands out as one of the club’s better players in a challenging season. With Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos keeping a close eye on PSL talent, Cele’s strong displays could put him in contention for a national team recall.
Having begun his professional career in Europe after leaving the KZN Academy in 2016, Cele has gained valuable experience, but his path to international football has only truly opened up following his return to the South African league. Now, with his sights firmly set on a Bafana Bafana call-up, Cele is determined to continue his fine form and make a lasting impression at Kaizer Chiefs.
