Thabo Senong Reflects on Developing Bafana Bafana Stars
FIFA Talent Coach Thabo Senong, a prominent figure in South Africa’s youth football development, has highlighted his pivotal role in shaping the careers of several Bafana Bafana stars, including Oswin Appollis, Lyle Foster, and Teboho Mokoena. Senong, who has an impressive track record in nurturing young talent, is now focused on advancing youth football in Malawi as part of his work with the Football Association of Malawi (FAM).
Senong’s coaching journey is deeply intertwined with South Africa’s youth football programs. He previously held positions in some of the country’s top academies, including Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Diambars Academy. However, his most notable contributions came during his tenure with the South African Football Association (SAFA), where he served as the U-20 head coach, U-17 assistant coach, U-23 assistant coach, and Bafana Bafana assistant coach.
During his time with SAFA, Senong guided the South African U-20 team to two CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and two FIFA U-20 World Cups. At the 2019 U-20 World Cup, his team faced tough competition, exiting the group stage against a Portugal squad featuring future global stars like Rafael Leão and Diogo Dalot. Despite this, the tournament showcased future South African talents such as Appollis and Thabiso Monyane. Senong also played a role in the development of players like Siyabonga Ngezana, Luther Singh, and Aubrey Modiba, who have since established themselves at senior levels.
Reflecting on his contribution, Senong told CAFOnline: “I was very fortunate to be part of leading youth football programs in South Africa. My goal was to establish solid foundations for the senior team. We recruited the right talents into the junior national teams, won regional tournaments like COSAFA, and ensured consistent representation at CAF and FIFA tournaments.”
He added, “Today, the senior national team of South Africa is reaping the rewards of the solid foundation we laid. Oswin Appollis, Lyle Foster, Teboho Mokoena, Aubrey Modiba, and others are our graduates.”
Senong’s emphasis on long-term development has had a lasting impact on South African football. His efforts have ensured that Bafana Bafana now benefits from a steady pipeline of talented players groomed at the youth level. As he continues his work in Malawi, Senong’s legacy in South African football serves as an inspiration for future coaches and players alike.
