Thamsanqa Gabuza Transitions to Centre Back For SuperSport United! The striker was placed in a new role recently.

SuperSport United lost 2-1 to Dondol Stars in the Nedbank Cup on Wednesday night. Veteran striker Thamsanqa Gabuza played the entire 90 minutes as a defender.

Ganda Ganda has been a striker in the PSL for about 15 years now. He has divided opinion in his tenure as a striker, with some claiming he isn’t good enough, despite playing for the likes of Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United.

On Wednesday night, he was employed as a central defender for the first time in his PSL career.

Matsatsantsa took the lead through Siyabonga Nhlapho in the first half. The visitors scored two second half goals through Relebogile Molefe and Kholofelo Monama.

Head coach Gavin Hunt explained the decision to play Gabuza at centre back.

“Well, it was either him or me. So I thought he looks a little bit fitter than me,” he told Lwazi Ziqubu of SuperSport TV before the game.

“We’ve ran out of centre backs, we don’t have anybody we’ve got injuries and suspensions things like that.

“But it is what it is, we can’t complain. We got to try and find solutions, that’s my job. The solution is we worked with him in the last two to three days on the training ground.

“It is what it is, I’ve got faith that he’ll do a good job and I think he will do a good job. And he’s played there before.”
