The last-32 of the Nedbank Cup was drawn yesterday afternoon. The stage looks set and ready to see yet more upsets.
For many years, this competition has been the best platform to witness David defeat Goliath. Last season was yet another example of how underdogs continue to do well in this tournament.
Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (now Marumo Gallants) went on to win the domestic cup after beating Chippa United in the final. This is after they provided a huge upset as they beat favourites Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi-finals.
Two seasons before, in 2019, TS Galaxy beat Kaizer Chiefs in the final in Durban. At the time, before the bought their DSTV Premiership status, TS Galaxy were monumental minnows.
Led by the charismatic Dan Malesela, the Rockets stunned Amakhosi at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. Zakhele Lepasa earned and scored the winning penalty in the dying embers of stoppage time, in regular time.
Past winners and finalists include the likes of Swallows FC, Black Leopards, TUKS and Bloemfontein Celtic.
“What a great achievement it is to reach this milestone; 15 years changing lives and helping others reach for their dreams, while growing and developing this wonderful game across South Africa. As Nedbank, we are honoured and proud of the work that has been accomplished through this sponsorship.
“Through our support for local football, we hope to continue growing the sport and helping communities. We thank our partners the PSL for their support and wish the best of luck to all 32 teams participating this year,” Khensani Nobanda, from Nedbank stated.
The dates, venues and times for the last-32 will be confirmed at a later stage. The Nedbank Cup Looks Set to Provide More Drama This Season!
