The Weekend Recap as the PSL Concluded On Saturday

The Weekend Recap as the PSL Concluded On Saturday. The ABSA Premiership as we know it concluded in thrilling fashion on Saturday. There was immense drama on both ends of the table. Mamelodi Sundowns capitalised on Chiefs’ frailties to win their third straight title. Polokwane City lost to Bidvest Wits and saw them relegated to the NFD.

Ernst Middendorp and Kaizer Chiefs failed to win their penultimate game of the season, meaning that Pitso Mosimane and Sundowns had the opportunity to win the Absa Premiership. Chiefs’ 1-0 draw to Baroka meant that Sundowns’ 3-0 win over Black Leopards was enough.

Sundowns sealed their 3rd straight title. This season is the last to be sponsored by ABSA. So it’s fitting that Sundowns took the last title. Their 5th league title in 5 years. The most dominant PSL side in the 2010’s.

At the other half of the table, Polokwane City lost their PSL status. Going into the game, Clinton Larsen’s side needed a handsome result to give themselves a chance. Not only did Polokwane fail to win, but they lost to a 10-men side.

Polokwane have looked like a relegated outfit since the return of football after lockdown. Goalkeeper Chigova performed admirably. That still wasn’t enough to salvage anything positive.

Black Leopards on the other hand have to scrap for their place in next season’s PSL through the playoffs. Mongezi Bobe’s side come up against Tshakhuma F.C and Ajax Cape Town. Lidoda Duvha will have to find it in them to come up trumps.

Other results saw Orlando Pirates claim a 1-0 win over Stellenbosch. This saw the Buccaneers seal 3rd spot and continental football next season.
