Themba Zwane – I Want To Create History
Nearly a decade ago, Themba Zwane walked through the gates at Chloorkop and says he knew his life would change forever.
‘Mshishi’ can easily now be considered one of the country’s top players and in that time he has piled on the winners’ medals with eight trophies: three Absa Premiership titles, a CAF Champions League and Super Cup title, winning the Telkom Knockout twice as well as adding the Nedbank Cup to a glowing collection.
Zwane says he knew arriving that the bar was set pretty high, especially now with the club being on the verge of claiming the La Decima.
“It will mean a lot to me,” he says of the possible record 10th championship.
“When I came to Sundown in 2011, I told myself that I want to create history and make history to repeat itself. To be honest I was ready for anything and I manage the pressure because I know what people want from me. I am expected to deliver at all times.”
He is one of several players to have already featured in more than 30 matches throughout the season in all competitions, and his contribution has not gone unnoticed.
“The secret is that you need to be consistent and work hard. Remember that at Downs we have a lot of quality players so if you don’t do that they will take your place,” says ‘Mshishi’ of his 13 goals and 10 assists in the games he’s featured in.
Football will return soon and Masandawana are aiming to retain their league title with nine matches still outstanding and just a mere four points behind log leaders Kaizer Chiefs, who have played one game more.
“I am trying to improve the ‘Mshishi’ of last season of course,” the attacker says of his 11 goals and 7 assists in an unbelievable 39 matches. “I only compete with myself, and give credit to my teammates because they make things to be easy for me.”
