Jose Mourinho was hired in November 2019 after the club sacked Mauricio Pochettino.
“The Club can today announce that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra have been relieved of their duties.” Spurs said in a statement.
Club chairman Daniel Levy is a notoriously no nonsense club owner. He doesn’t waste time in pulling the trigger should the finances of his club be in detriment.
“Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a Club. Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic.
“On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged. He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.” Levy said of Jose Mourinho.
Spurs are currently 7th on the Premier League table and face a tough battle for a 4th place position. This is a far cry from the lofty heights which the club had developed for itself over the years.
The club has gotten close to lifting elite silverware, such as the UEFA Champions League and Premier League, under Pochetinno. They finished second in both competitions under the Argentine.
Mourinho has not been able to replicate this form. He has now failed to win a trophy at a club for the first time in his illustrious career.
