TS Galaxy Chose Chicago Fire Over Mamelodi Sundowns for Puso Dithejane’s Development

TS Galaxy chairman Tim Sukazi has revealed that Mamelodi Sundowns offered more money than Chicago Fire for winger Puso Dithejane, but the Rockets decided that a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) would better serve the young player’s long-term ambitions. The decision highlights how a transfer can involve more than the size of a financial offer, particularly when a club believes a player has the potential to reach the highest levels of European football. Dithejane attracted interest after producing consistent performances in the Betway Premiership, establishing himself as one of TS Galaxy’s important attacking players. Although Sundowns had the financial strength and domestic reputation to make an attractive proposal, Chicago Fire presented a different opportunity for his career. Sukazi explained that the club considered the winger’s future prospects before deciding which offer to accept.

Speaking on Metro FM’s Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube, Sukazi confirmed that both Mamelodi Sundowns and Chicago Fire were interested in securing Dithejane’s signature. Sundowns sporting director Flemming Berg was involved in pursuing the player, while Gregg Berhalter represented Chicago Fire in his roles as head coach and sporting director. Sukazi acknowledged that Sundowns’ initial offer was considerably higher when negotiations began, making the final decision an important one for TS Galaxy. However, the club did not judge the proposals solely on their immediate financial value. Instead, the Rockets assessed which destination could provide Dithejane with the strongest pathway for continued development and a possible future move to Europe.

Sukazi explained that TS Galaxy considered whether Dithejane could use Chicago Fire as a stepping stone towards playing for a major European club. The chairman believed that the winger could continue developing in the United States while gaining experience in a different football environment. He made it clear that the decision was based on a broader assessment of the player’s future rather than simply accepting the highest offer. For a developing footballer, regular opportunities, coaching, exposure and the ability to adapt to new challenges can all influence long-term progress. TS Galaxy therefore opted for Chicago Fire because the club believed the MLS route offered attractive possibilities for Dithejane’s career.

Dithejane’s transfer followed two productive seasons with TS Galaxy, during which he became an increasingly influential figure in the team’s attack. The winger made 63 appearances across all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing 13 assists. Those numbers reflected his contribution in both finishing moves and creating opportunities for his teammates. His performances also earned him Betway Premiership Player of the Month awards in August, November and December 2025, underlining his consistency during that period. His progress attracted attention from some of South Africa’s biggest clubs and helped establish him as a player with the potential to succeed beyond the domestic league.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ interest was particularly significant because the club has established itself as one of South Africa’s leading teams, regularly competing for domestic honours and continental success. A move to Chloorkop could have offered Dithejane the opportunity to compete for major trophies and work within a squad accustomed to high expectations. However, Sukazi confirmed in January 2026 that TS Galaxy had rejected Sundowns’ proposal because it did not meet the club’s valuation of the player. The chairman’s latest comments add another dimension to that decision by revealing that the offer was higher than Chicago Fire’s proposal when discussions began. They also show that TS Galaxy weighed the player’s development prospects alongside the financial terms before choosing the American club.

Kaizer Chiefs were also linked with Dithejane because of his previous involvement in the club’s academy system. However, the available information indicated that Chiefs did not submit a formal offer for the winger. Sundowns and Chicago Fire consequently emerged as the main contenders in the transfer discussions described by Sukazi. The interest from established clubs demonstrated how much Dithejane’s performances had improved his standing in the game. For TS Galaxy, the transfer also represented an opportunity to make a strategic decision about a player whose potential extended beyond the South African league.

Dithejane’s move to Chicago Fire was confirmed in January 2026, with the winger signing a contract running through the 2029/30 season and the club holding an option for 2030/31. He occupies a place under MLS’s U-22 Initiative and an international roster position, giving the transfer a clear place within the club’s squad planning. The length of the agreement provides a framework for his continued development in the United States, although his future progress will depend on his performances and the opportunities available to him. Moving to a new league also requires a player to adjust to different tactical demands, teammates and competitive conditions. Dithejane’s challenge was therefore to build on the foundations he established at TS Galaxy and demonstrate that he could make an impact in MLS.

His early contribution to Chicago Fire offered encouraging signs. By August 2026, Dithejane had made 22 appearances for the club, recording two goals and one assist in Major League Soccer. One of his standout moments came in the Leagues Cup, where he scored both goals in Chicago Fire’s 2-1 victory over Mexican side Cruz Azul. The performance demonstrated his ability to make a decisive contribution in a high-pressure match against well-known opposition. While a single result cannot determine the success of a transfer, such performances can help a young player gain confidence and establish himself in a new environment.

Dithejane’s progress also brought opportunities at international level. In September 2026, the winger received his first senior Bafana Bafana call-up for Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea, following previous involvement with South Africa’s under-20 and B teams. He subsequently made his senior international debut and scored his first goal for the national side. Representing South Africa at senior level marked another important stage in his career and increased his experience beyond club football. For TS Galaxy, his international progress provides further context for Sukazi’s belief that choosing a suitable development pathway was important when considering the competing offers.

Ultimately, Sukazi’s explanation shows why TS Galaxy preferred Chicago Fire despite receiving a higher offer from Mamelodi Sundowns for Puso Dithejane. The decision was based on the club’s assessment of the winger’s long-term prospects and the possibility that success in MLS could eventually open doors to European football. His appearances for Chicago Fire, decisive performance against Cruz Azul and first senior Bafana Bafana call-up have provided encouraging milestones since the move. Nevertheless, his longer-term progress will depend on maintaining consistent performances, earning opportunities and continuing to develop as an attacking player. TS Galaxy’s choice reflects a broader principle in football transfers: the best destination for a young talent is not always the club prepared to pay the most, but the one that offers a promising environment for the next stage of his career.
