Tshegofatso Mabasa Eyes Orlando Pirates’ All-Time Scoring Record

Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa is on the brink of making history as he edges closer to becoming the club’s all-time top scorer. Over the weekend, Mabasa netted a stunning hat-trick against Baroka FC in the Nedbank Cup last 16 at Orlando Stadium, surpassing the late Lesley Manyathela’s tally and bringing his goal count to 44 for the Buccaneers.
With only 14 goals needed to surpass Benedict Vilakazi’s record of 58 goals, Mabasa is determined to etch his name in the club’s history books. According to the club’s official website, Vilakazi remains Pirates’ all-time leading scorer, but Mabasa is closing in rapidly.
Inspired by a Legend
Mabasa has openly shared his admiration for Manyathela, who tragically passed away in 2003 after a SAA Supa8 clash against Jomo Cosmos. The striker expressed deep respect for the former Pirates forward, acknowledging his influence on his career.
“Off the top of my head, Lesley Manyathela is one player that I wish the country could have seen more of. It’s just unfortunate what happened, and may his soul continue to rest in peace. He was one of the best strikers this club has ever had. To be up there with him is an honour and a privilege for me. I am looking to break each and every record that I can stumble across,” Mabasa said after the Nedbank Cup draw in Randburg, Johannesburg.
Chasing the Record and Silverware
While many footballers shy away from discussing personal achievements, Mabasa has embraced the challenge of chasing the club’s all-time scoring record. His ambition is clear: to cement his legacy at Pirates while also contributing to the team’s pursuit of silverware.
“Definitely, it’s something that I am looking at (the all-time top scorer record). As a striker, I pride myself on the chances that I take and the goals that I score. Being able to leave a mark and a legacy at this club will be something really great for me. And obviously, being a club I supported growing up, it will really mean a lot to me,” the former Bloemfontein Celtic forward stated.
Upcoming Fixtures
Following their dominant performance against Baroka in the Nedbank Cup, Pirates will shift their focus back to the Betway Premiership. Their next test comes against Golden Arrows at Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammersdale on Wednesday night.
With Mabasa in top form and eyeing records, Pirates fans will be eager to see if their star striker can continue his remarkable goal-scoring run and lead the team to more success.
