Update on Andrew Phiri’s Trial at Orlando Pirates: Zambian Striker Returns to MUZA

There is a fresh update regarding the trial of highly-rated Zambian striker Andrew Phiri at Orlando Pirates. The 23-year-old forward recently underwent an assessment under the watchful eye of Pirates’ head coach, Jose Riveiro, and his technical team. However, while the Buccaneers have not disclosed how Phiri performed during the trial, his current club, Maestro United Zambia (MUZA), has provided an update on his situation.

Phiri has now returned to Zambia, where he has rejoined his team at MUZA. He featured in their recent fixture against ZESCO United, which ended in a heartbreaking 1-0 loss after the team conceded a goal in stoppage time.

Despite returning to Zambia, discussions about Phiri’s potential move to Orlando Pirates are still pending. MUZA’s management has not yet had a chance to speak directly with Phiri regarding his trial experience in South Africa. According to MUZA’s CEO, Joel Kabika, Phiri immediately rejoined his teammates at the club’s camp in Ndola, a location several hundred kilometers away from their base, making it difficult for the club to gather details from him in person.

“We haven’t yet met with the player. On his arrival, he went straight to join the team in camp in Ndola, which is about 300 km from where we are. We haven’t had the chance to speak yet, but we are expecting to meet today,” Kabika explained in an exclusive interview with the Siya crew.

While MUZA has yet to engage with Pirates directly about Phiri’s trial, the club plans to initiate talks to better understand the next steps for the player.

“We have to talk. We have to find out from Orlando what they are saying,” Kabika concluded, leaving the striker’s future uncertain for the time being.

For now, Phiri remains a part of MUZA’s setup as discussions about his potential move to Orlando Pirates continue. The next few days could be crucial in determining his future, as both the player and club await further clarity on what lies ahead.
