Wydad AC Make Big Decision on South African Duo Mailula and Lorch

Wydad Athletic Club have reportedly made a major decision regarding their South African stars Cassius Mailula and Thembinkosi Lorch, as the Moroccan giants look to build continuity ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
The pair were both brought in during the 2024/25 season, with Mailula joining the Casablanca-based outfit at the start of the campaign, followed by Lorch’s arrival in the mid-season transfer window. Their signings were largely influenced by then-head coach Rulani Mokwena, who had worked closely with both players during his time at Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
Following Mokwena’s exit, there was uncertainty surrounding the futures of Mailula and Lorch, particularly amid reports suggesting they were only retained to bolster the squad for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
However, new information from Moroccan outlet Le360Sport reveals that current head coach Mohamed Amine Benhachem is keen to keep both South African attackers at the club beyond the Club World Cup. The coach is reportedly an admirer of their talent and views them as vital components of his long-term plans at Wydad.
Benhachem’s desire to retain the duo has influenced the club’s stance, with Wydad president Hicham Ait Menna said to have already initiated discussions with the players regarding contract extensions or renewed agreements for the 2025/26 season.
The decision to continue with Mailula and Lorch signals a clear intent from Wydad to maintain squad stability and avoid disruptions as they prepare not only for domestic and continental competitions but also for the high-profile Club World Cup on American soil.
Both players have gradually adapted to the demands of Moroccan football, and their technical ability, pace, and experience at international level have reportedly impressed the club’s new technical team.
If negotiations go well, Mailula and Lorch could be set to enjoy another full season in North Africa, giving them the opportunity to further establish themselves at one of the continent’s most prestigious clubs.
