Wydad Athletic Club Push to Secure Thembinkosi Lorch in Permanent Deal

Wydad Athletic Club are reportedly making a last-minute push to secure the permanent signing of South African star Thembinkosi Lorch, following his impressive loan spell at the Moroccan giants.

According to Moroccan outlet Al Jarida 24, the player’s agent, Steve Kapeluschnik, has travelled to Morocco to hold crucial talks with Wydad officials. The meeting is expected to determine whether the club can reach an agreement with Mamelodi Sundowns for a full transfer before the new season begins.

Lorch, 31, joined Wydad midway through the 2024/25 season and made an immediate impact, most notably at the FIFA Club World Cup, where his performances against European powerhouses Manchester City and Juventus earned him praise from international observers. Despite Wydad’s early exit from the tournament, the South African attacker’s technical skill, experience, and work rate stood out.

Wydad are reportedly eager to retain Lorch and avoid losing both South African players from the previous campaign. The club recently passed on the option to buy Cassius Mailula — also on loan from Sundowns — for a reported €700 000 (R14.4 million), but are now prioritising Lorch’s future.

However, negotiations with Sundowns may prove challenging. The Tshwane club are said to be holding firm on their €1 million (R20.6 million) valuation of the Bafana Bafana forward — a figure Wydad currently consider too steep. The Casablanca-based outfit are hopeful that the agent’s presence can help persuade Sundowns to lower their asking price or work out more flexible payment terms.

Wydad, who have been dominant in Moroccan and continental football in recent years, are keen to strengthen their squad with proven international talent. Lorch’s continued presence would offer them a seasoned performer with CAF Champions League and international experience.

As talks continue behind closed doors, Wydad fans will be watching closely, hoping their club can strike a deal and retain one of their standout performers from last season.
