PSL Legend Siyabonga Nomvethe Comes Out Of Retirement At 42

Former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs striker Siyabonga Nomvethe has come out of retirement to join National First Division (NFD) GladAfrica side Uthongathi FC.

The club roped him on a six-month contract to add experience in the team and also motivate young players as they are gunning for automatic promotion to the Absa Premiership.

Uthongathi are currently placed second on the NFD standings with 31 points from 16 league games, a point behind leaders Ajax Cape Town, who have played one game less.

The 42-year old veteran striker accuses former club Amazulu of reneging on their agreement as they had promised him a role within the club structures but nothing materialised.

“I was waiting for something from AmaZulu after I had retired, but it didn’t come. So, I had to go back and play and these guys, Uthongathi, seriously wanted me,” Nomvethe said.

“I want to play until I’m 45 and if I feel good then I will play until I’m 50.”.

Nomvethe made a name for himself while playing for several PSL clubs, including African Wanderers, Chiefs, Pirates, Moroka Swallows and most recently AmaZulu.

Overseas, he played in Italy for Udinese and Empoli among other teams and also plied his trade in Denmark for Alborg BK.

In all, he scored 167 goals in 412 starts in club football in the various countries in which he played, and also has 16 goals in 81 appearances for Bafana Bafana.
