Zitha Kwinika Opens Up on Leadership Role at Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika has explained his evolving role at the club, which has seen him captain the team since his return this season. After a difficult campaign last season where he played just six games, Kwinika was handed a contract extension and has become a key figure both on and off the field.
The 31-year-old defender has been trusted with the captain’s armband in the last three matches by coach Inacio Miguel, reflecting his experience and influence within the squad. Kwinika emphasized that leadership in football extends beyond matchday appearances.
“I think that is the other thing in football, football is a journey and for some of us, where we have certain roles to play because sometimes it is not always about being on the field,” Kwinika said. “I have a role to play behind the scenes when I’m not playing to help the guys, help the team, and keep going. So, sometimes it is not mainly about being on the field. When I’m not on the field, I have another responsibility, which is pushing the guys from the back.”
Kwinika highlighted the importance of personality and experience in guiding younger teammates. “It is mainly about personality because at the end of the day, it is not about me, it is about the team, it is about the group. Some of us have experience, went out, and understand how the environment works, so it is important to bring the boys back and try to show them certain things about the culture.”
He also shared that mentoring involves sharing lessons from his career. “I can share stories about where I have been and what other boys have not experienced. So, it is upon me to integrate them, try to show them how things are done, and hopefully for the good of the team,” Kwinika added.
Kwinika’s approach demonstrates how leadership at Chiefs combines on-field performance with mentorship and culture-building, helping to strengthen the squad for the season ahead.
