Matthew Booth Slams Broos For Criticising SA Football

Matthew Booth has slammed Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos after he publicly criticised South African League standard and the quality of players. Booth feels that Broos should have kept his opinion inside himself even if he sees issues.

Th 70-year-old coach said South Africa have been failing to produce the quality to compete with top countries they play against. He made example of their recent matches where they faced Morocco, Ghana and France, stating that there’s no way they could have matched those rivals as they have a better quality than SA’s.

“I think there are things that you need to keep to yourself,” Booth told KickOff. “If I was in his shoes being foreign earning a salary in a distant land I wouldn’t be criticising the league or the institution paying your salary.

“I would keep that to myself. “Him coming from a country that has been so successful in world football with a population of only 16 million while holding the number one spot in the world, he should be coming with ideas and plans and suggestions and not criticism.

“But having said that, Carlos [Queiroz] attempted that, Carlos Alberto Perreira attempted that, so if you don’t have someone to listen to, to change then there is no point in suggesting these things.

“I felt he should have kept those sentiments to himself especially when the players are playing under you. They are under your charge and you should not be making such statements in public.”

The former Bafana defender was not the first to disapprove what Broos did as Mamelodi Sundowns senior coach Steve Komphela didn’t waste but went straight to shoot the Bafana coach on social media.

The former Chiefs coach felt that the Belgian tactician has been insulting the nation and lacks diplomacy. The main thing Komphela was criticising on the coach was the tone he used to express himself not his opinion.

“This coach has been insulting everyone as he wished and none of you members of the fourth estate saw this coming. Nothing wrong with voicing an opinion but please understand that this is a nation and not some cabal in a forest. Where’s the intelligence in such reckless statements,” tweeted Komphela.

“Our nation is addressed with so much carelessness and lack of tact. It is disrespectful and to some, it sounds like the honest truth but for others, the tone is just as condescending. I have never heard of a national leader who lacks diplomacy like that one. If you want to be addressed like that, with no respect or regard, he’s your coach alone!

“I do not dispute standards, there’s a lot to that as well, but a national address needs to carry a particular tone. He’s not only talking to his nation, but he’s also reflecting his nation to other nations as well. He must address us as his nation and not some observer with no allegiance.
