Bongani Zungu Starts as Rangers Top Europa League Group! They top their group with a record breaking 14 points.
They become the first Scottish side to ever reach 14 points in any European competition. They could’ve reached a 100% haul of 18 points.
Rangers let two two-goal leads slip against Benfica in both their matches. Fortunately for Zungu and Rangers, this didn’t stop them from topping their group.
Steven Gerrard was pleased with Zungu’s performance. He said that the midfielder showed maturity and class despite receiving an “unfortunate” yellow card.
“I thought Zungu played with maturity and experience. I thought he was unfortunate to get booked, but on a yellow card, I thought he cruised it, if you like.” Gerrard told Rangers TV.
“I thought he was really aggressive out of possession, and he is going to be a big player for us from now until the end of the season.
“I am really pleased for him as it has taken time to get him ready and up to speed.”
Stevie G was also pleased that their two draws against Benfica didn’t cost Rangers top spot in the group.
“The boys are really happy in the dressing room and they deserve to be. Over the course of the campaign, we have deserved to be number one in the group – it has been six outstanding performances.
“Arguably, we could have beaten Benfica away and at home, so we definitely deserve at least 14 points.” He also added.
Zungu will be looking to cement his place in the starting XI for Rangers. Rangers remain the only unbeaten team in all competitions this season.
