Nasreddine Nabi Praises His Players After Historic Nedbank Cup Win Over Sundowns

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has delivered a heartfelt message to his players following their dramatic 2-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi-final of the Nedbank Cup on Sunday.

The win, achieved at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, has reignited hope at Naturena as the Soweto giants stand just one game away from ending a painful 10-year trophy drought. It was Chiefs’ first win over Sundowns in four meetings this season, making the result even more momentous.

By booking their place in the final, Amakhosi have also kept their continental ambitions alive. A victory in the final — where they will face long-time rivals Orlando Pirates in a blockbuster Soweto Derby — could see them qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup. Alternatively, if Pirates finish third in the DStv Premiership, Chiefs could still secure continental football through the cup result.

Taking to Instagram, Nabi shared his emotions and appreciation for his squad’s resilience in what has been a demanding campaign.

“We all know this season has been a tough one. That’s why today, my pride in this team, our phenomenal fanbase, the management, and the board is even greater,” Nabi wrote.

His special message was reserved for the players, who delivered a spirited performance to overcome one of the continent’s most dominant sides.

“Most importantly, to my players – on Sunday, you showed immense character, resilience, and dedication against one of Africa’s best teams. You have faced criticism head-on and applied yourselves with such professionalism and heart.”

Nabi also revealed that several players had battled through physical challenges to deliver the result, acknowledging the sacrifices made behind the scenes.

“The sacrifices you have made, some playing through pain, do not go unnoticed. You deserve all the credit for Sunday’s victory!”

As Kaizer Chiefs prepare for their biggest match in a decade, Nabi vowed that the team would continue giving everything for the badge.

“This is a significant moment. We will continue to give absolutely everything for this beloved club in the remaining games of the season InchAllah.”

The final is scheduled for May 10 at Moses Mabhida Stadium, where Chiefs will have the chance to not only lift a trophy but reclaim their place among South Africa’s elite.
