AFCON inspired ABSA Premiership

Coming back from the Africa Cup of Nations, PSL resumed this week with 25 goals scored in 8 fixtures.  The second leg of the PSL is one to follow with the top three teams tied at 28 points. Supersport United, Cape Town City and Bidvest Wits are title contenders with Wits having two games in hand.

Wits coach, Gavin Hunt speaking to media after a 5-0 victory against Ajax Cape Town said, “I am happy that we are scoring goals and keeping a clean sheet”. Wits is motivated to be PSL champions this season following their disappointment last season after being runner-up’s.

The 2015/2016 PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns will however not let their title slip away and they made their intentions to defend their throne clear by a 1-0 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic. Sundowns have a mountain to climb to catch up with the top three log leaders but they have only played 10 games out of the 16 games played already.

Not only is the top flight of the PSL contented for but there is survival of the fittest in the bottom log. Perhaps it is too early to tell who will be relegated but Highlands Park, Baroka FC and Free State Star sit at the bottom of the log after poor starts to the season and having changed coaches except Baroka FC who are still with their coach Kgokolo Thobejane from National First Division. All three teams lost as PSL resumed but will fight to stay in the top flight league in South Africa.
