Mourinho hails ‘important step’

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was satisfied with his side’s last-gasp 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday, saying it moves them one step closer to the title.

QPR made life very difficult for the Blues and will count themselves extremely unlucky coming away from the game without anything to show for their efforts.

The game looked destined to end in a draw until a Robert Green error gifted Chelsea with a golden opportunity in the 88th minute, which Cesc Fabregas finished expertly.

Even more frustrating for Rangers is the fact that Fabregas’ effort was Chelsea’s first shot on target all game and it cost them the points.

Despite not registering an accurate shot until the very end of the game, Mourinho maintains his side controlled the fixture and deserved the points.

“Our situation was positive,” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “One point would be one less point we need, but the reality is three points and it is one less match we need to win.

“It is an important step. The best quality was we controlled the game very well.

“They can score, have dangerous players and are very direct.

“We kept calm and tried to keep calm against a side who were very well organised defensively.

“During the season you always have these moments where you lose and win points at end of the game.

“We lost points at the end at Old Trafford and won points in the last few minutes [today].

“I always thought it was very important to keep a clean sheet because it was always going to be difficult to keep a clean sheet here.”
