On the 14th of June 1987, the team made mathematically sure of the title after beating Zaragoza at La Romareda (1-3) in the penultimate game of the season. The madridistas won the game thanks to a Butragueño double and Solana strike.
The 1986/87 campaign followed a new format, using a play-off system to decide the title-winners. After being the best team for 34 rounds of games, Real Madrid led the top six teams in the table, who then went head-to-head to choose a champion. At the end of the longest ever LaLiga season – 44 matches in total – madridistas finished with the most points (66), ahead of Barcelona (63).
Hugo Sánchez, top scorer
The madridistas were the championship’s leading scorers with 84 goals, and Hugo Sánchez got his hands on the Pichichi Trophy with 34 himself. The squad was managed by Leo Beenhakker, who that year picked up his first of three league titles in the Whites’ dugout.
