Alongside his technical sponsor Puma, Luis Suarez has donated 500 footballs to youth teams in the cities in which Suarez has played in. This will include Nacional, FC Groningen, Ajax Amsterdam, Liverpool FC, FC Barcelona and current team Atletico de Madrid.
His 500th goal of his career is his 19th of the current league campaign in La Liga.
“I wanted to give back to the seven teams that have shaped me as football player.” He told Puma.
“I wanted to give a boost to the youth teams in need of support and equipment to inspire them to follow their dreams.
“I wanted to pay tribute to the teams, players and fans who have been a part of my journey; Nacional, Groningen, Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona, Madrid and Uruguay are all very close to my heart, so this was a special tribute to them and their communities.
“Breaking the record is an individual honour, but I could never have achieved this feat alone. My teammates and the fans have been there with me every step of the way.
“Sport unites people and brings communities together. I hope the donation and the letter can bring a smile to people’s faces.
“Football has given me so much and I would like to give something back to the people.” He concluded.
Suarez is only the 5th active player to reach this milestone. He follows Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
He also shared a heartfelt letter on his social media page, thanking all the teams he has played for. He credits everyone who has ever crossed paths with him on his incredible footballing journey.
