Lionel Messi Is Officially A Free Agent! The 34 year old saw his contract with lifelong club Barcelona come to an end today 1 July 2021.

Lionel Messi has refused to sign a contract extension with FC Barcelona. This means that for the first time in his illustrious career, Lionel Messi is a free agent.

The Argentine forward was embroiled in a transfer embargo with his club Barcelona before the beginning of last season. Messi asked to leave, as was stipulated he could do in his contract.

However, the covid-19 pandemic meant that the dynamics of that clause were harmed. The season ended 2 months later than normal, so that clause had effectively expired.

This meant that Messi could leave the club this year as a free agent.

It remains to be seen whether Messi will sign a contract extension at the club or not. There are rumours of PSG and Manchester City being open to signing him.

Last season Lionel Messi was once again the best player for FC Barcelona. He notched up more goals and assists than anyone once again.

Returning club president Joan Laporte has vowed to keep Messi at the club until he retires.
