Achami Set to Join Mokwena’s Coaching Team at Wydad
Moroccan coach Youssef Achami has confirmed his impending appointment as assistant coach to Rulani Mokwena at Wydad Athletic Club. The announcement comes as the South African tactician continues to stabilize his tenure at the Moroccan giants, with the team currently in third place in the Botola Pro Inwi.
Achami, 48, is no stranger to Wydad. He previously served as an assistant coach under Faouzi Benzarti and Zoran Manojlovic between 2018 and 2020. Known for his fluency in English and deep knowledge of Morocco’s top division, Achami is highly regarded by Wydad’s management. Speaking to Goud, he stated, “There is an agreement between me and the Wydad management to work as an assistant coach to Rulani Mokwena, waiting for matters to be formalized and announced officially as there are still procedures.”
The move follows months of speculation that Wydad’s leadership was seeking a Moroccan coach to help Mokwena adapt further to the league. This partnership aims to strengthen the coaching team and bolster the club’s chances of securing continental football next season, which they missed out on this year.
With 11 league games remaining, Wydad hopes Achami’s addition will aid their push to reclaim dominance in domestic and African competitions. Mokwena, a Johannesburg native, has faced challenges in Casablanca but seems to be finding his rhythm.
Achami’s return marks his third stint with the three-time African champions, solidifying his strong ties with the Red Castle. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as Wydad looks to benefit from this strategic appointment.
