Kaizer Chiefs Eye Midfield Reinforcement with Sphephelo Sithole as a Potential Signing

Kaizer Chiefs are ramping up their efforts to bolster their squad ahead of next season, with a particular focus on strengthening their midfield. According to reliable sources, the club has renewed its interest in European-based player Sphephelo “Yaya” Sithole, who is currently playing for Gil Vicente in Portugal.
Amakhosi had previously shown interest in Sithole, but now, insiders indicate that he is firmly back on the club’s radar. The decision to revisit the possibility of signing the 26-year-old comes after the realization that acquiring players from local rival teams has proven to be a difficult task for Chiefs. The club is, therefore, exploring international options to enhance their squad.
A source close to the club revealed, “The coach has apparently noticed that signing players from rival teams locally is very difficult and that’s why they want to see if they can get players from outside South Africa. Of course, the club is still looking at players locally, but if they can’t get the right ones, they will go outside the country and that’s why they have reignited their interest in Yaya. He is actually back on their radar. They believe he can complement the team very well with the current midfielders of (Gaston) Sirino, (Mdu) Shabalala, (Ox) Mthethwa, (Thabo) Cele, (Yusuf) Maart and even (Edson) Castillo.”
The club is currently in the process of evaluating how best to bring Sithole into their fold, as they believe his skills would be an excellent addition to their midfield options for the upcoming season.
In addition to their pursuit of Sithole, Kaizer Chiefs are also considering reshuffling their current midfield roster to make room for new arrivals. A second source confirmed this, saying, “It’s a work in progress. They are building and working on letting other midfielders go while bringing in the ones they believe will help the team going forward. One of the ones they are looking at bringing in is Sphephelo Sithole. They have been monitoring him for some time now and are convinced he can fit into the team system.”
Sithole, who is currently on loan at Gil Vicente from Liga 2 side CD Tondela, made a strong impression with Bafana Bafana in 2024. Although he recently suffered an injury while on national team duty, his talent and potential have not gone unnoticed by Chiefs, who are eager to secure his services.
The midfielder’s possible arrival at Kaizer Chiefs reflects the club’s commitment to enhancing their squad with top-quality talent as they aim to make a stronger push for domestic and continental success in the coming seasons.
