George Matlou’s Future at Kaizer Chiefs in Doubt as AmaZulu Circles

The future of Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou remains uncertain as his contract approaches its end in June, and speculation is growing over a potential move away from Naturena. According to information gathered by the Siya crew, AmaZulu FC have emerged as one of the clubs keeping a close watch on the player’s situation.
The 26-year-old joined Chiefs from Swallows FC three years ago but has struggled to fully establish himself as a regular starter, partly due to injury setbacks. While Matlou has featured in several matches this season, questions remain about whether he will be offered a contract extension.
AmaZulu Showing Strong Interest
Sources close to both clubs have confirmed that AmaZulu are monitoring the situation closely, with an eye on possibly securing Matlou on a free transfer should Chiefs decide not to renew his contract.
“What I can tell you now is that the team that I know to have shown interest in George (Matlou) is AmaZulu,” a Siya source revealed. “It could still be at the early stages as things are, but it’s believed that they have enquired about him.”
A second source added that no talks are currently underway between Chiefs and Matlou over a new deal, casting further doubt over his long-term future at the Soweto giants.
“There are no talks at the moment regarding the renewal of his contract,” the insider stated. “His contract expires in June, and by now he should be knowing whether he is staying or not. That could give AmaZulu a real chance to sign him for free.”
Agent Confirms Interest from Other Clubs
Matlou’s agent, John Wilson, has confirmed that there are indeed clubs interested in the midfielder, though he declined to name specific suitors.
“I am aware of interest from several clubs regarding George’s future,” Wilson told Soccer Laduma. “At this stage, we’re focused on exploring all available options to ensure the best path forward for his career. George is focusing on the remaining league games of the season and the Nedbank Cup final.”
Decision in Coach Nabi’s Hands?
With Nasreddine Nabi looking to end Chiefs’ trophy drought in the Nedbank Cup final, Matlou will hope that strong performances in the closing stages of the season could tilt the scales in his favour. Whether the Tunisian tactician sees Matlou as part of his long-term plans remains to be seen.
As of now, both AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs have not officially commented on the matter. However, with time running out, a decision on Matlou’s future is expected soon. If Chiefs choose not to renew, the midfielder could be on his way to Durban as part of Usuthu’s rebuilding efforts ahead of next season.
