Themba Zwane Poised to Lead Mamelodi Sundowns’ Charge for Second CAF Champions League Title

As Mamelodi Sundowns prepare to challenge for their second CAF Champions League crown, veteran midfielder Themba Zwane is set to play a pivotal leadership role in guiding the team through the final stages of Africa’s premier club competition.

Zwane, who has been a central figure at the club for over a decade, is one of only two remaining players from the squad that lifted the prestigious continental trophy in 2016, alongside legendary goalkeeper Denis Onyango. With years of experience and a calm presence both on and off the pitch, the 34-year-old is expected to be an influential voice in the team’s latest title pursuit.

Thapelo Morena, another long-standing member of the team, joined shortly after the group stages during the 2016 campaign but didn’t feature in any matches that year. Since then, the Sundowns squad has evolved significantly, but Zwane believes the current group might be even stronger in key areas.

“I think with this group, I can say it is better,” Zwane said. “But it is more of the same because of the brotherhood that we have and the understanding.”

Zwane emphasised that leadership within the squad is widespread and not confined to those wearing the captain’s armband. “I feel like everyone is a leader in this group. You don’t have to put an armband to be a leader, but you can see everyone can lead,” he explained.

“You see when we play that everyone gives instructions because we understand each other, along with the love that we give as a team,” he added, pointing to team unity and strong interpersonal relationships as the foundation of Sundowns’ success.

With Zwane recently returning from injury, he is expected to feature prominently in the upcoming fixtures. His presence will be crucial not only for his ability to dictate play in midfield but also for his experience in handling high-pressure matches on the continental stage.

Zwane also praised the role of communication in the squad’s cohesion, saying, “What helps is the communication because we communicate a lot as players and understand each other. But mostly like I said, it’s the love we have for each other.”

Mamelodi Sundowns, who are also in the race for multiple domestic titles, are hopeful that their rich blend of experience and youthful flair can take them all the way in Africa. As the team eyes continental glory once more, Themba Zwane stands ready to lead the charge—armed with wisdom, belief, and the unshakable unity of a team bonded by more than just football.
