Gomora United Confirm Rooi Mahamutsa Stay Ahead of Debut Motsepe Foundation Championship Season

Newly promoted Motsepe Foundation Championship side Gomora United have confirmed the future of veteran defender Rooi Mahamutsa, as preparations intensify for their first-ever season in South Africa’s second division.

Gomora United, based in Alexandra, secured promotion after a triumphant run at the ABC Motsepe National Play-Offs held in Tshwane just two weeks ago. Their rise to the Championship was hard-fought, and they will be joined by The Bees and Midlands Wanderers—who finished second and third respectively in the tournament.

While the club prepares for the challenges of the 2025/26 campaign, one of the most talked-about names in their squad has been that of Mahamutsa. The 42-year-old former Orlando Pirates centre-back is now set to continue his career, making him one of the oldest players in the Motsepe Foundation Championship—second only to midfielder Atisang Batsi, who featured for Orbit College last season.

Club chairman Joe Seanego has officially confirmed that Mahamutsa will not be hanging up his boots just yet.

“Rooi is staying. He promised that he would take me to the PSL (Premier Soccer League) and then retire,” Seanego said.

Mahamutsa’s leadership and wealth of experience have been instrumental in guiding the team through the lower divisions, and his presence will be invaluable as Gomora United aims for a competitive debut season.

In addition to Mahamutsa’s confirmed stay, the club is also holding onto the technical team that masterminded their promotion. Head coach Johnny Ferreira will continue at the helm, having won the trust of the management with his successful campaign. Former Orlando Pirates left-back Patrick Phungwayo will remain in his role as assistant coach, further strengthening the club’s experience both on and off the pitch.

“The coach and the technical team are staying,” Seanego added, underlining the club’s desire for stability as they enter uncharted territory.

With key leadership figures in place and a rising belief within the camp, Gomora United are gearing up for what promises to be an exciting season. Their journey from amateur ranks to the Motsepe Foundation Championship has already inspired many, and with the likes of Rooi Mahamutsa still leading from the front, they will be eager to prove they belong at the next level.
