Orlando Pirates End Trial Period of Zambian Striker Enock Sakala Jr.

Orlando Pirates have reportedly ended their trial assessment of Zambian forward Enock Sakala Jr., who was part of the club’s early pre-season preparations in July but has since returned to Zambia, with strong indications that he will not be signed ahead of the 2025/26 season.
The 23-year-old striker, formerly with Chippa United and Egyptian outfit Modern Sport, joined the Buccaneers’ training camp in Johannesburg in a bid to secure a permanent deal. Sakala was given a chance to impress the technical team during the first phase of pre-season as Pirates looked to bolster their attacking options.
However, the forward’s time with the Soweto giants was cut short after he sustained an injury during the trial period, forcing him to bow out prematurely. A source close to the situation revealed that the injury ultimately halted his chances of earning a contract.
“Enock Sakala Jr. has gone back home to Zambia after picking up an injury while on trial at Pirates. He was doing well and showing signs of hunger, but the knock proved to be costly. He is unlikely to get the deal now and it’s unclear if he will be getting another opportunity at the club any time soon,” the insider explained.
While Sakala showed glimpses of potential and drive during training, the untimely injury disrupted any progress he was making. Pirates have since shifted their focus to other options in the market as they continue their search for a reliable striker to boost their firepower ahead of the new campaign.
Despite his exit, the Buccaneers remain open to signing a forward should the right candidate become available. The technical team is keen to add depth in attack, especially with a busy season ahead that includes domestic and continental commitments.
Currently, Tshegofatso Mabasa and Evidence Makgopa lead the line for Pirates and have both impressed with their goal contributions and physical presence. Boitumelo Radiopane is also returning to full fitness and pushing for more game time after a lengthy injury layoff.
In addition, Pirates recently secured the services of promising young striker Yanela Mbuthuma from Richards Bay FC, adding to their attacking options as they aim to compete at the highest level in 2025/26.
With Sakala’s chapter at the club seemingly closed for now, all eyes remain on Pirates’ next move in the transfer market as they prepare to challenge for silverware in the new season.
