Nkanyiso Shinga Reflects on Kaizer Chiefs Debut After Toyota Cup Clash

New Kaizer Chiefs signing Nkanyiso Shinga has expressed optimism about his future at the club following his debut appearance during the Toyota Cup match against Ghanaian powerhouse Asante Kotoko.

The highly anticipated encounter, held at Moses Mabhida Stadium, ended in a goalless stalemate before Kotoko edged out the Soweto giants 4-3 in a penalty shootout, handing Amakhosi their second consecutive loss in the pre-season competition.

Despite the result, the spotlight was firmly on Shinga, who recently joined Chiefs after a seven-year stint in Europe. The 24-year-old defender, a product of the KZN Academy, spent time in Portugal before sealing his move back home to don the famous black and gold jersey.

Speaking after the match, Shinga opened up about his transition and the warm welcome he received from the team.

“It’s been good. The way they have received me… Since I got here, it feels like I’m home,” Shinga told SABC Sport. “It’s different from previous times when I would join a new team, it would take me time to adjust. But the way I have been welcomed in this team, I feel confident, I feel I can give more.”

Shinga also highlighted the emotional significance of joining Kaizer Chiefs, a club he has admired since his younger days.

“It’s been a dream to play for Chiefs, from the times of Masilela. It’s been a dream. So I have to fight for this badge.”

With competition for defensive positions heating up—thanks to the presence of players like Bradley Cross and Happy Mashiane—Shinga knows he’ll have to work hard to earn his place in the starting lineup. But he remains unfazed, focusing instead on building chemistry with his teammates and adapting to the team’s playing style.

“I can say there are many things we want to improve,” he said. “Like we said, we want to try and play from the back and go forward, and understand each other. Have connections. Know where to pass when I have the ball, just understanding each other.”

Despite the pre-season setback, Shinga remains confident about what lies ahead.

“I think it will be a great season.”

Kaizer Chiefs now shift their focus to the upcoming Betway Premiership campaign, which kicks off in August. Fans will be hoping that the new recruits, including Shinga, can help the club return to its winning ways and restore its dominance in South African football.
