Deon Hotto Etches His Name in MTN8 History with Orlando Pirates

Namibian international Deon Hotto has cemented his place in the history of South African domestic football after lifting yet another MTN8 title with Orlando Pirates. His latest triumph came at Mbombela Stadium, where Pirates overcame Stellenbosch in a dramatic final that stretched to 120 minutes.

True to his reputation, Hotto displayed relentless commitment and energy throughout the match. His work rate once again stood out, underscoring why he has become one of the most trusted and consistent performers in the Pirates squad.

Hotto has now won the MTN8 five times with the Buccaneers, a feat that highlights his longevity and influence at the club as he navigates his sixth season in black and white. The Namibian joined Pirates from BidVest Wits five years ago, and the competition has become the stage where his biggest moments have unfolded.

Statistics reveal just how central he has been to Pirates’ MTN8 success. Hotto has featured in every single game the club has played in the tournament since his arrival, bringing his tally to 21 appearances. Out of those matches, he has started in 19, only twice coming off the bench to make an impact.

What sets him apart is his record in finals. For all four editions of the MTN8 that Pirates have won during his time at the club, Hotto has played every single minute. No other player in the current setup can claim the same distinction.

In 2020, he featured for the full 90 minutes against Bloemfontein Celtic. Two years later, he repeated the feat against AmaZulu. The 2023 showdown against Mamelodi Sundowns saw him put in 120 minutes before converting the first penalty in the shootout that sealed victory. Last year, against Stellenbosch, he played the full 90. This season, once again against Stellenbosch, he delivered another 120-minute performance, adding another chapter to his remarkable record.

At 34, Hotto continues to defy age with his consistency and resilience. His contribution ensures that his name will remain firmly associated with the MTN8 in South African football history. For Pirates, he is more than a veteran presence. He is a symbol of reliability in the moments that matter most.
