Abdeslam Ouaddou Silences Critics by Winning MTN8 in Maiden Season with Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has transformed early-season criticism into celebration, lifting the MTN8 trophy in his first season despite some fans calling for his dismissal just weeks ago.
Stepping into the shoes of Jose Riveiro was always going to be a challenge. Riveiro himself faced a difficult start before winning over Pirates supporters, but Ouaddou was not granted the same patience. After three opening Betway Premiership games, which yielded one win and two losses, critics questioned his methods.
Some early struggles were self-inflicted. Ouaddou experimented too frequently with the team’s setup and attempted to integrate 13 new signings too quickly, disrupting the squad’s rhythm.
He adjusted his approach. By reinstating key players who formed the core of Pirates’ five trophies over three seasons and gradually incorporating new arrivals, Ouaddou restored balance. His adjustments culminated in silverware at Mbombela Stadium.
“You know, like I said, a lot of people are very impatient in football,” Ouaddou said after the victory. “I don’t think I am better than two months ago. I’m still maybe a plumber or carpenter if you want. But I work with the heart, I love my job, I love football, and I always give my best.”
The MTN8 triumph raises questions about Ouaddou’s place among the league’s top coaches. However, the key takeaway is patience. Football is unforgiving, but coaches at major clubs need time to implement their philosophies and learn from mistakes.
For now, Ouaddou has silenced doubters and etched his name into Orlando Pirates’ storied cup history.
