South Africa Fall to France in U-20 World Cup Opener

South Africa’s U-20 side, Amajita, opened their 2026 FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign with a narrow 2-1 defeat to France on Monday night.

Coach Raymond Mdaka kept faith in the same squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year. Mamelodi Sundowns full-back Asekho Tiwani led the team as captain.

France started on the front foot, pushing South Africa back with long-range efforts from Tadjidine Mamdi, Mayssam Benama, and Ilane Toure. The pressure paid off in the 28th minute when Anthony Bermont punished a costly turnover, blasting home from inside the area to give France the lead.

South Africa responded quickly. Kutlwano Letlhaku won a penalty in the 33rd minute, and Jody Ah Shene converted with composure to level the score. The goal lifted Amajita, who managed to settle into the game as the first half drew to a close.

The second half was tightly contested. France looked dangerous, but the South African defense stood firm to deny clear-cut chances. Coach Mdaka made attacking substitutions after the hour mark, introducing Luke Baartman, Mfundo Vilakazi, and Siviwe Magidigidi to inject energy into the final third.

Despite the tactical changes, France regained control late in the game. In the 80th minute, Lucas Michal danced through the defense and fired into the far corner, sealing victory for the European champions.

The defeat leaves Amajita under pressure in Group C as they prepare for their next fixture. South Africa showed resilience and flashes of attacking promise, but they will need sharper decision-making and more clinical finishing if they are to progress from a tough group.
