Kaizer Chiefs Still Reeling From Sekhukhune United Defeat Ahead of AmaZulu Clash

Kaizer Chiefs’ 3-1 loss to Sekhukhune United continues to dominate conversations as the Soweto giants prepare to face AmaZulu FC this week. The defeat has left fans and pundits questioning the team’s consistency after a strong start to the season.
Chiefs began the campaign impressively, winning their first four matches before securing a credible draw against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns. The momentum, however, was halted by Sekhukhune United, with Bradley Grobler scoring twice and Thabang Monare adding a late goal. Flavio Silva’s strike provided only consolation for Amakhosi.
The weekend also saw Chiefs scrape past Angolan side Kabuscorp in the CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round, needing a penalty shootout after a 1-1 aggregate tie.
Former Chiefs striker David Zulu told KickOff.com that the team is still struggling to find its rhythm. “Kaizer Chiefs are not yet there. They are still trying to figure themselves out. The way we started this season gave me hope, but now we are slowly falling behind again. This favourite team of mine has yet to find its rhythm in key positions,” he said.
Zulu pointed out a lack of depth and leadership as key issues. “It shows that there’s not enough depth in the team. If certain key players are unavailable, there aren’t really any replacements ready to step in and maintain the performance. Chiefs are lacking a player who can lead the team, someone capable of carrying the team on their shoulders. It’s not that they don’t have talent – the team is there, but it needs individuals who can provide guidance on the pitch.”
The former striker also stressed the need for a change in mentality. “The confidence must come from the players. At the moment, when our opponents score first, we struggle to respond, and the players tend to panic after conceding. The mindset needs to change. As long as you are on the pitch, you need to perform. Even as I speak, I’m still trying to process the loss we suffered against Sekhukhune United. That game was Chiefs’ first major test this season, and the defeat has unsettled some of the players.”
As Chiefs prepare to face AmaZulu, questions remain over whether the team can regain its early-season form and find consistency in key positions to challenge for the PSL title.
