Kaizer Chiefs Secure Third Place With Confident 2-0 Win Over Sekhukhune United in Polokwane

Kaizer Chiefs returned to winning form in the Betway Premiership with a controlled 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday evening. The result carried major significance as it confirmed Amakhosi in third place on the league table and secured qualification for the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup. The Soweto giants showed patience and discipline in a match that remained tight for long periods before they eventually broke through late on. This win also restored confidence after a mixed run of results and reinforced their strong finish to the season. Sekhukhune United, on the other hand, saw their top-three ambitions slip further as they remained in fifth position.

The first half was competitive and cautious, with both sides showing respect for each other’s defensive structure. Kaizer Chiefs created the better chances, especially through Gaston Sirino, who returned to the starting line-up in place of the injured Mduduzi Shabalala. Sirino looked lively and tested Sekhukhune goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata in the 38th minute, but the Zambia international produced a sharp save to keep the scores level. Chiefs pushed for a breakthrough but lacked precision in the final third, while Sekhukhune struggled to build consistent attacking momentum. The match went into halftime locked at 0-0, reflecting the balance of play despite Chiefs looking slightly more threatening.

The second half opened with increased urgency from Kaizer Chiefs as they pushed higher up the pitch and moved the ball faster. Sirino had another clear chance seven minutes after the restart but failed to make proper contact with the ball inside the penalty area, allowing Nsabata to collect comfortably. Sekhukhune tried to respond through their attacking rotations, but they found it difficult to break down the Chiefs defence led by Edmilson Dove and Given Msimango. The introduction of substitutes changed the tempo for Chiefs, with Tashreeq Morris and Mfundo Vilakazi adding fresh attacking energy. Glody Lilepo also became more influential as Chiefs increased pressure in the final stages of the match.

The breakthrough finally came in the 86th minute when substitute Tashreeq Morris converted a well-delivered cross from Glody Lilepo to put Kaizer Chiefs ahead. The goal shifted momentum completely in Chiefs’ favour and forced Sekhukhune United to push numbers forward in search of an equaliser. However, their efforts left space at the back, and Chiefs capitalised again in stoppage time when Lilepo was fouled inside the box. Mfundo Vilakazi stepped up and calmly converted the penalty in the 91st minute to secure a 2-0 win. The result highlighted Lilepo’s impact, as he played a key role in both goals and was widely regarded as the standout performer on the night.

This victory confirmed Kaizer Chiefs’ third-place finish and ensured qualification for continental football next season, marking an important step in their long-term rebuilding process. The team showed resilience and patience, especially in a match where chances had to be worked for rather than given. Sekhukhune United will be disappointed after missing their opportunity to challenge for a top-three finish, as their defeat leaves them in fifth place heading into their final fixtures. Chiefs will now look to close their season strongly against AmaZulu FC and Chippa United while maintaining momentum. The performance in Polokwane offered a clear sign of progress and provided a strong platform for the club as they prepare for both domestic and continental competition ahead.
