Mamelodi Sundowns’ Packed 2026/27 Schedule Set to Challenge PSL Fixture Planning

Mamelodi Sundowns are once again expected to face one of the busiest football calendars in South African football as preparations continue for the 2026/27 season. The Premier Soccer League has already drafted a preliminary fixture list, but several matches involving the reigning African champions remain subject to change because of their extensive commitments across multiple competitions. Domestic football, continental tournaments and international events will all compete for space on the calendar, making scheduling a complex task. As a result, supporters should expect alternative dates for several Sundowns fixtures throughout the campaign. The club’s success on both local and international stages continues to create unique scheduling challenges that the PSL must carefully manage.
The Tshwane giants are scheduled to compete in 30 Betway Premiership matches between August and May, forming the foundation of their domestic campaign. Alongside the league programme, Sundowns will also participate in South Africa’s major knockout competitions, including the MTN8, the Carling Knockout and the Nedbank Cup. Each tournament adds more fixtures to an already demanding calendar. If Sundowns progress deep into these competitions, as they often do, the number of matches will increase significantly. This means the PSL must remain flexible when finalising dates throughout the season.
The biggest scheduling obstacle comes from the CAF Champions League, where Sundowns will once again be among the favourites following their continental success. The Confederation of African Football has confirmed that the 2026/27 Champions League campaign will begin between September 4 and September 6 before concluding on May 31 next year. Across that period, there are 15 weekend dates reserved for Champions League matches from the preliminary rounds through to the final. Those weekends become unavailable for domestic fixtures whenever participating clubs remain in the competition. This significantly reduces the number of weekends available for the PSL to schedule league and cup matches involving Sundowns.
Sundowns are expected to benefit from their status as defending CAF Champions League winners when the tournament begins. They will not participate in the first preliminary round and could also receive a bye in the second preliminary round, allowing them to advance directly to the group stage. While this reduces the number of early continental fixtures, it does not eliminate the scheduling difficulties later in the competition. Once the group stage begins, the calendar becomes increasingly congested with league fixtures, domestic cups and continental commitments all taking place simultaneously. Every successful result in Africa creates another challenge for fixture planners back home.
The CAF Super Cup presents another important commitment for the Brazilians during the season. Sundowns are scheduled to face Algerian side USM Alger on October 31 in a match that rewards the winners of Africa’s major club competitions. This prestigious encounter removes another weekend from the domestic calendar, forcing the PSL to adjust league schedules around the event. Although it creates logistical challenges, participation in the Super Cup highlights Sundowns’ continued dominance on the continent. Competing for another international trophy remains a priority for the club despite the pressure on their schedule.
The situation becomes even more demanding because Sundowns are also expected to compete in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. Based on the previous edition of the tournament, matches are expected to take place between September and December. Sundowns will first face the winner of the match between Al Ahli Saudi FC and Auckland FC in the FIFA African, Asian and Pacific Cup. Victory in that fixture would see them progress to the FIFA Challenger Cup, where they would meet the winner of the clash between the 2026 Copa Libertadores champions and 2026 CONCACAF Champions Cup winners Deportivo Toluca FC. Should they continue their impressive run, they would then earn a place in the Intercontinental Cup final against UEFA Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain, with that match likely to take place in December.
International football also contributes to the congestion of the football calendar. FIFA has already allocated several international windows during the season, including September 21 to October 6, November 9 to November 17 and March 22 to March 30, 2027. These international breaks remove additional weekends from domestic scheduling because players report to their national teams. Clubs like Sundowns, who regularly provide numerous players to Bafana Bafana and other national teams across Africa, are particularly affected by these interruptions. The PSL must account for these dates when organising league fixtures to ensure clubs are not unfairly disadvantaged.
When all competitions and international commitments are combined, Sundowns could lose access to approximately 20 weekends for domestic football between August and May. This leaves the PSL with limited flexibility to fit league and cup matches into an already crowded calendar. Alternative dates, midweek fixtures and possible fixture rearrangements are therefore expected throughout the season. Such adjustments are not unusual for clubs competing at the highest level, but they require careful planning to protect player welfare while maintaining the integrity of every competition. Coaches, players and supporters will all need to adapt as the season unfolds.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ demanding 2026/27 schedule reflects the club’s status as one of Africa’s leading football teams. Success in domestic and continental competitions has earned them opportunities to compete on the global stage, but it has also created one of the most complicated fixture lists in South African football. The PSL faces the difficult task of balancing league commitments with continental tournaments, international competitions and FIFA calendar dates. While fixture changes may inconvenience supporters at times, they are an unavoidable consequence of Sundowns’ continued excellence. If the club once again progresses deep into every competition, the 2026/27 season could become one of the busiest and most memorable campaigns in its history.
