Abdeslam Ouaddou Continues to Set New Standards as Orlando Pirates Return to the Top

Abdeslam Ouaddou has continued to strengthen his reputation at Orlando Pirates after guiding the Buccaneers back to the top of the Betway Premiership at the beginning of his second season in charge. The Moroccan-French coach enjoyed a remarkable first campaign at the club, leading Pirates to the league title after a 14-year wait while also delivering success in two domestic cup competitions. His first season was statistically the best league campaign in the club’s history, setting several records across points, victories, goals scored and goals conceded. Now, after beginning his second season with Pirates sitting at the summit, Ouaddou has added another layer to an already impressive record. His results suggest that the coach has established a winning culture at a club where expectations remain exceptionally high.

Ouaddou’s first season at Orlando Pirates produced a league campaign that will be difficult to surpass. The Buccaneers collected 69 points from 30 matches, the highest points tally recorded by the club in a single league season. That figure surpassed the previous record of 64 points achieved during the 1996/97 and 1999/2000 campaigns. Pirates averaged 2.3 points per match and won 21 of their 30 league fixtures, making the number of victories another club record for a single season. The statistics demonstrate not only the consistency of Ouaddou’s team but also its ability to turn strong performances into maximum points.

The attacking output of Pirates was equally impressive during the title-winning campaign. The Soweto giants scored 58 goals across their 30 league matches, setting a new club record for goals scored in a season of that length. The previous best was 52 goals during the 2004/05 campaign, meaning Ouaddou’s side significantly improved on an established benchmark. At the other end of the pitch, Pirates conceded just 12 goals, which represented another outstanding achievement for the club. That defensive record improved on the 16 goals conceded during the 2002/03 title-winning season and helped provide the foundation for their championship success.

The overall goal difference of plus 46 further illustrated the dominance of Ouaddou’s Pirates side. The team did not rely on narrow victories alone but regularly combined attacking efficiency with defensive discipline. Winning the league while conceding so few goals demonstrated that the coach had managed to create balance across the squad. The success also extended beyond the Betway Premiership, with Pirates adding the MTN8 and Carling Knockout trophies to their collection. Three major trophies in one season transformed Ouaddou’s first campaign into a landmark period for the club and established a high standard for his second season.

The start of the new campaign suggests that Ouaddou has no intention of allowing those achievements to become a one-season exception. Pirates have returned to the top of the standings early in the campaign, reinforcing their position as one of the leading contenders for domestic honours. The latest statement came in emphatic fashion when the Buccaneers defeated Chippa United 3-0 at Kings Park Stadium on Sunday. Ghampani Lungu opened the scoring, Lebone Seema doubled the advantage and Daniel Msendami completed the victory late in the match. The result moved Pirates above Kaizer Chiefs and provided further evidence that the champions remain determined to defend their league title.

Ouaddou’s overall record at Orlando Pirates makes his impact even more notable. He has now won 23 of the 33 matches in which he has been in charge, giving him a winning rate of approximately 70 percent. He has suffered only three defeats during that period, with two of those losses coming in his first two league matches as Pirates coach. Such consistency places his tenure among the strongest coaching records in the club’s modern history. The numbers also demonstrate how quickly he adapted to the demands of managing one of South Africa’s biggest football clubs.

His points-per-match record provides another indication of his effectiveness. Ouaddou has averaged 2.3 points per match during his time in charge, giving him the best points-per-game figure among coaches who have led Pirates since the era of Viktor Bondarenko, Augusto Palacios and Ronald Mkandawire during the 1996/97 season. Maintaining such a high average over 33 matches requires more than short-term momentum. It reflects a sustained ability to win games and avoid unnecessary dropped points. For a club competing for trophies across multiple competitions, that consistency provides an important platform for continued success.

Despite his impressive results, Ouaddou has not avoided criticism during his time at Orlando Pirates. The coach has previously suggested that his direct and honest approach can sometimes create unnecessary controversy around the team. He has argued that his willingness to speak openly can be used by others to create tension or misinterpret his intentions. For Ouaddou, however, challenging his players and addressing psychological issues remains an important part of his role. His comments after the victory over Chippa suggested that he sees honest communication as a tool for improving performances rather than as a source of conflict.

The Chippa United victory provided a clear example of the type of response Ouaddou wants from his players. Pirates were frustrated for much of the first half, with Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali making several important saves to keep the match scoreless. Rather than allowing that frustration to affect their approach, the Buccaneers continued applying pressure after the interval. Lungu eventually broke the deadlock in the 60th minute before Seema scored four minutes later, giving Pirates control of the match. Msendami then completed the scoring in the 88th minute, providing his first goal for the club and sealing another convincing result.

Ouaddou’s challenge now is to maintain those standards while dealing with the increased expectations that come with success. Winning the league, MTN8 and Carling Knockout in one season means opponents will be particularly motivated to stop Pirates. The Buccaneers will also have to balance their league responsibilities with their upcoming MTN8 semifinal against Sekhukhune United. Squad management, player fitness and tactical adaptability will become increasingly important as the season progresses. Ouaddou’s ability to keep the team focused despite growing pressure could determine whether Pirates can repeat their extraordinary achievements from last season.

The early evidence is encouraging because Pirates have already returned to the top of the league standings after their latest victory. Ouaddou has built a record that combines a high winning percentage with remarkable points-per-match figures and major trophy success. His first season established new club benchmarks, while the opening stages of his second campaign suggest that the standards have not dropped. The 3-0 victory over Chippa United also demonstrated the team’s ability to remain patient before producing a decisive second-half performance. For a coach who has already delivered one of the most successful seasons in Orlando Pirates history, the challenge now is to turn that excellence into sustained dominance.

Ouaddou has therefore given Orlando Pirates more than a league title and a collection of trophies. His record has established measurable standards for winning, consistency, attacking production and defensive organisation. With 23 victories from 33 matches, a 70 percent winning rate and a points-per-match average of 2.3, his influence is evident in the numbers as well as the silverware. The return to the top of the Betway Premiership at the beginning of his second season provides another indication that his first campaign was not an isolated success. If Pirates can maintain their current form and navigate the demands of the league and MTN8, Ouaddou could further strengthen his place among the club’s most successful modern coaches.
