Abubeker Nassir Yet to Debut for University of Pretoria Following Wrist Surgery

Since joining University of Pretoria at the start of the season, striker Abubeker Nassir has yet to make his debut. The Ethiopian international, who previously played for Mamelodi Sundowns, has been sidelined due to a wrist operation.

Nassir, 25, signed a one-year deal with AmaTuks after Sundowns chose not to renew his contract following a challenging period at Chloorkop. Sources confirm that the forward is currently undergoing rehabilitation and is expected to return to action soon.

In an interview with Soccer Laduma, Nassir’s agent Steve Kapeluschnik explained, “He had a wrist operation at the end of last season. He is back. He signed with Tuks for a year. He is busy in rehab and I hope to have him playing soon.”

Nassir joined Sundowns in 2022 from Ethiopian Coffee, arriving with high expectations after a promising debut season in Ethiopia. His second season at Chloorkop, however, was less successful, with limited appearances during the 2023/24 campaign. A loan spell to SuperSport United was intended to provide more playing time, but the lingering wrist injury curtailed his contribution.

The injury setback is believed to have been a key factor in Sundowns’ decision to release him at the end of last season. University of Pretoria acquired the striker to bolster their attack in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, hoping he can regain fitness and impact the promotion race.

AmaTuks’ coaching staff remain optimistic that Nassir will overcome his injury concerns. Once fully recovered, he is expected to provide the attacking threat they need as they push for a return to the Betway Premiership.

The striker’s rehabilitation progress will be closely monitored, with fans and management eager to see him finally make his debut and contribute on the field.
