Hugo Broos Stresses Importance of Durban Crowd Ahead of Zimbabwe World Cup Qualifier

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has highlighted the vital role of fan support ahead of South Africa’s World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.

The match carries high stakes, with Bafana Bafana aiming to secure a place in next year’s FIFA World Cup in North America. Broos believes the energy from the crowd can provide the team with a crucial boost during critical moments.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Thursday, Broos praised the reception the team received upon arriving at their Durban hotel. “Look, when we arrived at the hotel and it was amazing that a crowd was waiting for us there. They were singing and very enthusiastic, they believe in us, and that makes us very happy,” he said.

He added that the atmosphere at the stadium could significantly influence the team’s performance. “We hope for the same crowd but multiplied by thousands at the stadium, because we need it. You’ll always have bad moments in the game, and if you can’t count on your supporters to lift the team, it becomes very difficult to overcome those moments. If they are there on Friday and make noise like they’ve done in our last six games here in South Africa in different stadiums, then that’ll help us enormously.”

Broos also stressed that while the game is not technically a home fixture, the players are counting on the crowd to provide the support needed to secure victory.

The upcoming fixture is crucial for South Africa, as the team seeks six points from their final two qualifying matches. With qualification on the line, every factor—from tactical execution to fan engagement—takes on added importance.

Bafana Bafana will look to leverage the home support and their recent form to maintain momentum and keep their World Cup hopes alive. Fans are expected to play a central role in creating the atmosphere that could help South Africa achieve a critical win against Zimbabwe.
