AFCON Review: Senegal Insist on Maintaining Calm Despite Last 4 Qualification! The Lions of Teranga got the better of Nzalang Nacional of Equatorial Guinea this weekend.
Senegal defeated Equatorial Guinea 3-1 in their AFCON quarterfinal clash this weekend. The Lions of Teranga are determined on keeping calm ahead of the semi-finals.
This was the first match were Aliou Cisse’s men looked like they could win the tournament. They produced a dominant display throughout the encounter and sealed it with three goals, which is impressive considering they only managed one goal through the entire group stages, which was penalty against Zimbabwe.
Sadio Mane scored their first goal from open play in the round of 16 before being taken off with a head injury.
Famara Diedhiou scored to give Senegal a 1-0 lead going into half-time. Soon into the second half the minnows equalised through Jannick Buyla Sam.
Cheikhou Kouyaté and Ismaïla Sarr then came off the bench to win the match for the tournament favourites.
“We played a hard-fought game against a good Equatorial Guinean team.” Aliou Cisse told the media after the hard-fought victory.
“We had the mentality to score three goals. We must congratulate the opposing team who were technically capable of creating problems for us.
“We must remember a good victory tonight, synonymous with qualifying for the semi-finals. We have had a very difficult start to our preparations, but we worked well afterwards and today we are gaining momentum.
“We must not get carried away because against Burkina Faso, it will be a big battle” he added.
