Amajimbos Advance to FIFA U-17 World Cup Knockout Stage Despite 3-1 Defeat to Italy

South Africa’s U-17 national team, Amajimbos, have progressed to the knockout stages of the FIFA U-17 World Cup despite a 3-1 loss to Italy in their final group stage match. The result capped a challenging group campaign, but Vela Khumalo’s side did enough to book a place in the next round after finishing second in their group.

Amajimbos entered the contest following a 1-1 draw with Qatar, while Italy had already confirmed qualification with a win over Bolivia. Khumalo made several changes to the starting lineup to inject fresh energy, bringing in Alwande Booyse, Lebohang Dhlamini and Sive Pama for the crucial encounter in hopes of securing at least a point.

The match got off to a difficult start for South Africa. Italy’s Samuele Inacio struck just four minutes into the game, punishing the Amajimbos for a lapse in defense. The early goal forced Khumalo’s men to chase the game, and it took time for them to settle and regain their rhythm.

Their persistence eventually paid off in the 32nd minute when Shaun Els netted his first goal of the tournament. The equalizer, which came from a well-constructed move down the flank, reignited South Africa’s hopes and boosted confidence heading into the halftime break.

After the interval, Italy regained control of the game. Antonio Arena fired home ten minutes into the second half, restoring Italy’s advantage after a clever assist from Valerio Maccaroni. The Amajimbos struggled to regain composure before Inacio struck again three minutes later, completing his brace and extending Italy’s lead to 3-1.

Despite several late attempts, South Africa could not find a way back. Substitute Ntlhakana Motaung came close in the closing stages, but the Italian defense held firm. The defeat was Amajimbos’ first of the tournament, but it did not prove costly. Bolivia’s failure to beat Qatar in the other group match ensured South Africa finished second and advanced to the Round of 16.

Coach Khumalo praised his players for their fighting spirit, highlighting their growth through the group stage. He emphasized the importance of learning from the mistakes made against Italy and focusing on tactical discipline in the knockout phase.

Amajimbos now await their next opponents as they prepare for one of their most significant challenges yet. Their ability to bounce back after setbacks and maintain composure under pressure will be key as they aim to continue their World Cup journey.
