Amajita Advance to FIFA U-20 World Cup Last 16 After Beating the United States 2-1

South Africa’s U-20 national team, Amajita, secured their place in the FIFA U-20 World Cup Last 16 with a hard-fought 2-1 win over the United States on Sunday night.
The result confirmed Amajita’s progress to the knockout phase after an impressive group campaign that included a dominant 5-1 victory over New Caledonia earlier in the week.
Coach Raymond Mdaka made one change to his starting lineup, bringing in Mamelodi Sundowns defender Thato Sibiya for Langelihle Phili, who started on the bench. The adjustment added stability at the back while maintaining attacking fluidity.
The United States opened the scoring in the 12th minute. Midfielder Matthew Corocoran delivered a precise pass to Noah Cobb, who slotted the ball past South African goalkeeper Fletcher Hani Smythe-Lowe to give the Americans an early advantage.
Amajita responded six minutes later. A quick counter-attack caught the U.S. defense off guard, and Siviwe Magidigidi finished with a near-post header to equalize. The goal marked Magidigidi’s third of the tournament, underlining his form as one of South Africa’s key attacking threats.
South Africa maintained their momentum and took control of the match before halftime. In the 43rd minute, Shakeel April delivered a well-placed cross into the box, which Gomolemo Kekana met with a composed finish from eight yards to make it 2-1.
The Americans pushed hard in the second half, increasing pressure in search of an equalizer. Their best opportunity came in the 80th minute when Niko Tsakiris found himself unmarked in the box, but his first-time volley sailed over the crossbar.
Amajita managed the closing minutes effectively, showing tactical discipline and defensive focus to protect their lead. Smythe-Lowe made a key save in stoppage time to preserve the victory.
The 2-1 win secured South Africa second place in Group E, ensuring advancement to the Round of 16. Amajita will now face the winners of Group F, with confidence high after two consecutive victories.
Coach Mdaka praised his team’s resilience and composure under pressure, noting that the group had matured with each match. The blend of local Premier Soccer League talent and youth academy players has proven effective on the global stage.
Amajita’s next test will determine whether this promising squad can continue their run and make a deeper push into the tournament.
