Amajita Bow Out of FIFA U20 World Cup After 3-1 Defeat to Colombia

South Africa’s Amajita saw their FIFA U20 World Cup campaign come to an end after a 3-1 loss to Colombia in the last 16 on Wednesday evening.
Coach Raymond Mdaka fielded a strong starting eleven featuring Asekho Tiwani, Tylon Smith, Siviwe Nkwali, Gomolemo Kekana, and Siviwe Magidigidi. Despite their attacking potential, Amajita found themselves on the back foot early in the match.
Colombia took the lead in the 7th minute when Joel Canchimbo turned in a cross from Oscar Perea at the far post. The early goal forced South Africa to chase the game, and they came close to equalizing ten minutes later. Shakeel April of Cape Town City curled a shot from distance, but it sailed just over the bar. Moments later, Thato Sibiya set up Kekana with a well-placed cross, but his strike flew over the target.
Mdaka’s side continued to push forward. Kaizer Chiefs youngster Vicky Vilakazi tested Colombian goalkeeper Jordan Garcia Bonnet with a powerful shot from the edge of the box, but the effort was saved.
Amajita finally found a breakthrough five minutes into the second half. Magidigidi was brought down by Garcia in the area, and Vilakazi stepped up to convert the resulting penalty, bringing South Africa level at 1-1.
Colombia almost regained the lead soon after when Neiser Villarreal’s header struck the post. The forward made no mistake later, restoring Colombia’s advantage midway through the second half. He collected a pass from Perea and drilled the ball into the bottom corner, putting the South Americans 2-1 ahead.
Mdaka made late attacking changes to find another equalizer. Magidigidi made way for Jody Ahshene, while Sfiso Timba replaced Neo Rapoo. Despite their efforts, South Africa could not find a way through the Colombian defense.
Colombia sealed the win deep into stoppage time when Villarreal broke free of the offside trap and calmly slotted home to complete his brace.
The result ended Amajita’s run at the tournament. Despite the exit, South Africa’s young talents showed flashes of promise against one of the continent’s strongest footballing nations. Their campaign provided key international experience as the team looks ahead to future CAF and FIFA youth competitions.
