Angola Coach Beaumelle Reflects on Narrow AFCON Defeat to Bafana Bafana

Angola head coach Patrice Beaumelle has spoken out following his side’s 2–1 loss to South Africa in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations opener. Despite the defeat, Beaumelle emphasized the positives from the performance and the lessons his team can take forward.
Bafana Bafana took the lead in the first half through Oswin Appollis. Angola responded when Manuel Shaw equalized, but Lyle Foster restored South Africa’s advantage in the second half, securing all three points for Hugo Broos’s side. The result left South Africa and Egypt level on three points at the top of Group B, while Angola and Zimbabwe remain in search of their first points.
Beaumelle acknowledged the quality of the opposition and the challenge his team faced. “We knew that facing Bafana Bafana would be difficult. Perhaps some people thought it would be an easy game for Bafana Bafana, but I think we played a strong game. It wasn’t easy, and we had some chances to score as well,” he said.
He also recognized South Africa’s strong tournament record. “The statistics keep coming, congratulations to Bafana Bafana. As I said, the statistics against Angola keep coming, but there is also another statistic — 27 games without a single defeat — so congratulations,” the 47-year-old added.
Despite the setback, Beaumelle stressed the importance of staying focused and learning from mistakes. “The tournament is long, and we have to collect points to stay in the group stage. The second of the three matches will be crucial for us to get points. But that’s football,” he said.
He also highlighted the positive atmosphere within the squad. “We lost one game today, but the atmosphere in the dressing room is positive because we respected the plan. We made a lot of mistakes, and when you make mistakes against a team like this, it’s difficult. We need to correct that and be more effective against Zimbabwe to collect points. We are still in the competition.”
Angola will face Zimbabwe on Friday in their second Group B match. Both teams suffered defeats in their opening games, making the fixture crucial for keeping their qualification hopes alive in the 2025 AFCON.
