Arthur Sales Steps Up Amid Lucas Ribeiro Costa’s Uncertain Future at Mamelodi Sundowns

The absence of Lucas Ribeiro Costa at Mamelodi Sundowns has raised questions about his future, while Arthur Sales continues to shoulder much of the responsibility once carried by his fellow Brazilian. Ribeiro, who has been linked with a transfer, has yet to feature for the Tshwane giants this season.
With his absence, Sales has been asked to adapt and take on a greater role in the squad. Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso addressed the situation by making it clear that no player should be expected to replicate Ribeiro’s impact.
“There is no two players that we can now make copycat of one player that is at the moment not with the team,” Cardoso said. “I don’t think it is up to me to give answers to the question of Lucas. For sure, in the proper time you will know everything that has happened with him.”
Cardoso was quick to praise Sales for his contributions, stressing that the forward is developing well in the role. “Arthur is doing well, showing dynamics of that, he understands what the team wants from that position, bringing his game to help the team,” the coach explained.
He also urged supporters not to frame Sales as a direct replacement for Ribeiro. “No one should expect a player to replace another but just one player who plays in the same position and another one was playing. So, the game will become different, but we will have to use the characteristics that we have in Arthur.”
Sales has shown steady progress with each appearance, offering the work rate and creativity needed in Sundowns’ attacking play. Cardoso noted that his continued improvement is vital. “Let’s hope he can stabilise his performance at a very high level because he is a player that we trust.”
As Ribeiro’s future remains unresolved, Sales’ growing influence provides Sundowns with an important boost. The club’s strength this season may well depend on how effectively he maintains consistency while the uncertainty over Ribeiro lingers.
