Siphelele Mthembu Joins Tshwane University of Technology as Varsity Football Seeks Experienced Striker

Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) have turned to experienced striker Siphelele Mthembu to boost their Varsity Football campaign. The forward, affectionately known as ‘Shaka Zulu’, is currently without a club after Pretoria Callies sold their Motsepe Foundation Championship status to Lerumo Lions.

Mthembu was on the bench as TUT played a goalless draw against University of Pretoria in a recent Varsity Football match in Tshwane. The result leaves TUT unbeaten after two matches, currently sitting fourth in the standings. The team scored only one goal in the competition so far, a 1-0 win over Durban University of Technology last week.

In an interview, Mthembu confirmed he has not retired from football and is keeping options open for the future, including a possible coaching career. “I always train with TUT here in Pretoria. They have asked me to come and help. There is nothing big, but just helping the team whilst I am still searching for a club to play for this season,” said the striker from Melmoth.

Mthembu made his PSL debut in 2008 with Orlando Pirates, after a legal dispute secured his move over arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs. He later played for Chiefs but has struggled to fully meet the high expectations generated early in his career.

TUT are coached by former Baroka FC tactician Bushy Moloi. The team recently hosted former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Cassius Mailula, who motivated the squad. The university has a history of producing PSL players, including Vusi Sibiya and Orlando Pirates defender Thabiso Lebitso.

Mthembu’s experience will be key as TUT look to improve their attacking output and secure victories, starting with their next fixture against Central University of Technology.
