Arthur Zwane Applauds Orlando Pirates’ Identity and Youth Integration

AmaZulu FC head coach Arthur Zwane has praised Orlando Pirates for the identity they are building on and off the pitch. He commended the Soweto club for their consistent use of youth talent and the continuity in their coaching approach.
Speaking at the launch of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season, Zwane singled out the Buccaneers’ integration of players from their DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) team into the senior squad. He noted that this move has helped the team remain competitive while building long-term strength.
“Last season, I was impressed with what Orlando Pirates did, as a bunch of their players came from the Diski Challenge, and they were competing,” Zwane told reporters.
Zwane also highlighted how the transition from former coach Jose Riveiro to newly appointed head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has been smooth. He said the new coach has continued the structures laid down by Riveiro without disrupting the club’s progress.
“Trust me, it’s still going to be tough to compete against this Pirates team because they are building an identity. The new coach has come in and is already doing well because he has continued where Jose left off. So, that’s how the game should be,” Zwane said.
Ouaddou took charge during the off-season after Riveiro’s departure. Despite the change, Pirates have maintained their playing philosophy and strategic focus, something Zwane believes is crucial for long-term success.
Zwane, who begins his first full season with AmaZulu, said he hopes to instil the same model at the Durban-based club. His vision includes building club systems that go beyond the coach’s influence.
“There should be continuity. It’s what we are trying to build at AmaZulu as well,” he said. “That’ll help so that even if I am not around – because as coaches we don’t stay too long for many reasons – whoever comes in competes and is able to produce and sell players.”
AmaZulu are in a transition phase, mixing experienced players with emerging young talent. The club is also focusing on strengthening its technical setup and development pathways.
While Pirates are seen as strong contenders for the league title, alongside Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch FC, Zwane believes AmaZulu are laying the groundwork for sustained success.
He stressed that long-term planning, youth development, and club-first systems are key to building a competitive team that can challenge at the highest level.
